The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) just won the ‘Training Initiative of the Year’ Award from Emirates Green Building Council for its Carbon Ambassadors programme. The award was received by Dr Yousef Al Akraf, DEWA Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources, during the ceremony.

Launched by Dubai’s Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon) in June 2014, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, DEWA sponsors the programme to involve youth in environmental and sustainability issues.

All the requirements of the Carbon Ambassadors programme, such as training courses, engaging the students in activities, workshops on sustainability etc. have been provided by DEWA in an effort to ensure the success of the programme.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tarer, MD & CEO of DEWA, explained that they’re pleased for winning the awards for the Carbon Ambassadors Programme as part of the efforts to achieve the objectives of the city government. The initiative goes side by side with the Carbon Abatement Strategy to reduce carbon emission by 16% by 2020.

The Carbon Ambassadors’s aim is that the next generation of leaders and experts  will work toward the ambitious National strategies and plans, as well as contribute to new innovations in initiatives and programmes. They will also help meet the UAE Vision 2021, Dubai Plan 2021, and Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 goals.

According to Dr Yousef Al Akraf, DEWA understands that in order to achieve the sustainable development goals, they will need young people as the driving force in building the greener future. Nowadays, young people will play a key role in making decisions at all levels. The sponsorship is a reflection of company efforts to increase creativity by providing the needed tools and training programmes that contribute to the growth of cognitive and innovative abilities.
