UAE : Air Quality is Imperative to Green Building Performance

A sustainability seminar held recently was attended and addressed by representatives of EmiratesGBC, Dubai Central Laboratory, and other industry players. It’s focus was on measures that can be implemented to improve air quality and on the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have in negatively impacting green buildings designs.

Saeed Al Abbar said, Chairman of Emirates Green Building Council said that indoor air quality is a critical consideration for regional sustainability levels, as people spend more than 90 percent of their time indoors. However, Building managers often overlook the aspect of indoor air quality.

Education about eco-friendly indoor environments such as choice of the paint; indoor air quality; related equipment such as HVAC, its maintenance, and its cleaning; and healthy living aspects, also need to be spread to consumers, owners, tenants and other industry players.

Al Abbbar added that industry stakeholders need to take serious considerations. With misguided use and a lack maintenance, ventilation systems might have the opposite of the desired effect on a green building’s performance.
